Tips for Writing a Good Cover Letter

03-05-2021

Nowadays, some consider writing a cover letter as outdated and unnecessary. However, the truth is that it remains an undeniable way to get the employer’s attention when all other applicants do is forward their CV.

For this reason, an application should always include a cover letter. Here are some tips:

Customisation

Employers come into contact with many types of CV and cover letters so they are too familiar with ‘standard reasons’. This is why instead of sending a cover letter with the same reasons as everyone else you should spend some time trying to understand your real reasons for applying to that job and getting the employer to understand that your values and expectations are exactly what the company is looking for.

Looking for a direct contact

Many times, it is not possible to identify the e-mail address of the person in charge of hiring or the Head of Human Resources, for which reason you have to send the cover letter to a general address. It is, however, ideal to send the cover letter and CV to the person who will be in direct contact with its contents.

Why?

You are not simply looking for a job: you are looking for a job where you will serve a purpose that will need to add value to the employer. This means that applicants must show on their cover letter what they undertake to do if they are hired for that job.

If the job offer clearly shows the problem that the company wishes to solve, it is essential for that proposed by applicants to tackle these needs in a clear and objective manner.

The tone

Although the tone of the cover letter should be adapted to the company to which you are applying, it is beneficial to use terms and phrases that will show some proximity on a more conversational level.
